Homeschooling for us is a relaxed approach to life for our young kids. There is no rushing to wake up or rushing out the house for school or tuitions, there is no stress of homework or such frustrations towards studying. At least not yet! Homeschool for us is life, living and experiencing life. We go to the market for market day, we enjoy a weekly farm day at a friends farm, we watch calves suckling for the first time and plant strawberries and then pick them! We dig and we climb and we play. We bake and we make mud pies and flower flavoured soup and enjoy the changing colour of water when a flower petal naturally dyes it. We smash stones with a hammer and nails into wood. We watch movies too and read our favourite stories. We play tennis and football with our friends and jump on the trampoline and play in the tree house. We look after our dog and take him for lovely walks. We swim down at the lake and pack picnics. We cycle and skate and roam in the forest, build shelters and listen to the birds sing and the monkeys call. Sometimes we just play with toys without toys, dress up and water the plants. We listen to music and dance and sometimes tinkle on the piano or play a song on the ukulele, sometimes we play school and write letters and paint and we can colour for hours and draw pictures of whatever we like however we like. And lately we have enjoyed seeing our cat ginger have five kittens and watching them grow. Spending time with family and friends in abundance.
Isn't that what life should be about for a five year old who is excited about turning six and looking forward to learning how to write.
Its a journey, a journey for me of letting go and letting things flow with their own rhythm. Our rhythm Is anchored by the rising of the sun and then the later rising of us. A small bite and a change of clothes then a morning of what we feel like. Lunch and some quiet time, then
an afternoon of playing with friends and then tennis class before home for relaxing, maybe a movie and then as the sunsets we think about bed and rest and stories and sleep! This is what homeschool means for us.....
